  1. My mate works for a pensions company. He gets to see quite a few death certificates, and nearly all of them (bar people being killed in an accident) have "Carcinoma" as the SECONDARY cause of death! Fisrt is normally organ failure, but the cancer causes the organ failure! Therefore, most people die of cancer, but not everyone knows that.
  2. Haven't been for two years! But must agree with you, always disappointing after the winter break. Roll on the warm, light evenings....always good for a few chucks and a good laugh aswell. Hope you get your distances back. P.S. How far you chucking?
  3. Do you use a multiplier? If so, is it possible the first couple of cast may have burnt the line? Does happen. The number of people I know who whack out a lead using brand new line and then come unstuck. Unless you are boat fishing, of course.
  4. Five mile limit for trawlers and nets. Dump our huge piles of used vehicle tyres out at sea to make artificial reefs. Any boats breaking the rules, burn 'em.
  5. I know, Stavey. Every Spring off Worthing there are numerous pairs of trawlers stripping the life from the sea bed. It starts when the bream arrive. One year, and this is no exaggeration, they came within a few hundred yards of the pier! I have also seen them in mid summer at low water a similar distance out from the low water mark. But, having said that, there weren't as many pairs last year, and I have it on good authority that the weed beds flourished in certain spots. But are the fish going to return to the beds? Only time (and pair trawlers) will tell.
  6. Yes, and no! Shore fishing in Sussex has shown decline in cod / codling, eels, flounders, plaice, mullet, etc. But there has been a marked increase in fish like smoothound, dogfish, bass (yes, bass!!), good size bream etc. Everyone blames commercial (over)fishing, which obviously has an impact. But the fish increasing in numbers apparently prefer clean water. Spider crabs have increased dramatically off the Channel coast, and these live in clean water as opposed to polluted water. The water conditions are much better now than what they were.
  7. Yeah, it's pretty grim, unless you go more than half way to France!
  8. Proof? Anyway, it shows willing. Better to practice returning fish unharmed than dumping them on the beach. As for wrecks, I can't believe that boat loads of anglers year in year out won't affect the number of fish living on it. It is a LOCAL niche, with different fish living together in a local area, not over miles of barren sea bed.
  9. 1) Match anglers. Chuck a load of fish in a bucket to die for the chance of winning a few quid. Some clubs are promoting catch and release, but many are not. From experience, many match anglers cannot be arsed to keep getting up of their backsides to take fish to the adjacent angler to verify, sign in etc. Answer: Need better attitude to fishing and not just think of their wallets. 2) Pleasure anglers (shore). Most just want a day/night fishing. If a fish of a reasonable size comes along, it is a bonus and may be kept for the pot. Small ones go back. Minority of idiots, many foreign, keep anything of any size and get agressive when challenged. Answer: Send them back! 3) Specimen Anglers (shore). Of the specimen anglers I know, all of them return their fish, even after many weeks of waiting for a good one. Answer: Have the correct attitude towards conservation. 4) Boat Anglers. From my experience, most anglers fishing deep water marks like wrecks, chuck all the fish in a box, mainly because the fish are f@cked by the time they reach the surface. Answer: Whats conservation? Please note: This is from my own experience and does not apply to everyone, so please do not take offence. If it does apply to you, well......
  10. Had gars, mackeral and scad in the pitch black on many occassions. I know that fish feel safe under the cover of darkness, but they must still be there in daylight, surely? I have fished whiting beaches in daylight and had nothing, but as soon as the sun has gone, it comes alive. I wonder if there are any divers that may have more of an answer.
  11. Many times while fishing during the daylight, the sun out, the water gin clear and calm, I have failed to get a bite. Then, as darkness falls, the fish go mad for your bait. I was wondering, are the fish simply not there in daylight, but much further out and come in under the cover of darkness, or are the fish there but asleep? I can't see, somehow, how fish can swim in from deeper water to feed just as the sun has gone down. Sometimes it is litterally like switching on the fishing! Anyone got any theories on this?
  12. Ollie, bit early for the beach crabs...another few weeks I'd say. To be fair, hounds aren't fussy whether the crabs are from the river or the beach. I bagged up in the last two years with plenty of doubles and I had them on frozen crab. I usually get a few from the beach, if not, a load from the river then freeze em down. That way the bait is always at hand when the fish arrive. And no hassle trying to keep the buggers alive!! I don't mind giving you a lift for crabbing or fishing if you are stuck for transport.
  13. More thant likley, lad, there are nowt cods left int north sea! (Blimey, my accent is cr@p!!)
  14. Stavey, good on you for staying! Don't let the minority of moderators favourites push you out. You, to me, seem to be a no nonsense, call a spade a spade kind of bloke, and those who don't like it need not reply. It does appear that some people on here get the leniant treatment, where others don't. Let's hope you future contributions are as lively and entertaining as your past ones, and let's hope not so many are deleted! P.S. Any mullet in the cuckmere yet?
  15. Totally agree. Take away the food, and the fish look elswhere.
  16. Good thread. I'm a shore angler and use clear Amnesia. Many swear by clear fluorocarbon lines as they have a refractive index very similar to water, making them virtually invisible under the water (apparently). Have tried placing different lines in a bowl of water to see which ones were visible.....they all were! The experiment was floored as you have to be UNDER the water with the lines to see if you can spot them! Haven't tried that yet! Red lines? Someone I know tried red Amnesia for scad fishing.....never got a bite! Swapped to clear and started bagging up!!
  17. Hmmm...maybe they're in the boats. Can't see them being on the beach yet as there isn't a crab in sight! (Get me a few crabs while your out!)

  19. You wouldn't say that if you caught nothing to tag trip after trip.
  20. So why was it stopped? Stavey was only expressing HIS opinion!
  21. Come back Stavey!! Off you go Brian, and take five of yer mates with you! (If you have that many).
