He sure did I'm so impressed with the yak fishing for the reason that it allows me to use such light tackle. And every fish can fight to there full it's great Greywulff

Kayak: Ocean Kayaks, Prowler 13 Date: 08/06/07 Location: Streedagh, Co. Sligo Duration: 9:30 17:00 Tide: Hw @ 11:20ish Weather: Sunshine not a cloud, Roaster 8) Bait: Mackerel/Lures jellyworms Rigs: Flowing trace/spinning trace Results: Mackerel, Pollack, Wrasse, Strap Conger C&R: Yes all but a few Mackies for bait. Well what can I say about this weather, "Unbloody Believable" Started at 9:30 to be on the water for the high tide, dropping two pop up lobster pots on the way out. Set up shop over a reef that runs from the shore where the tide deflects out along this reef. Where would ya get it, Starting out. The Bait. Pollack after Pollack couldn't keep track of them. Note the drop off on the Fish Finder Lots of Wrasse which took all day. Best Wrasse of the day. Good old thump-er Even made time to feed the locals. What a day started out with 2 rods ledgered but couldn't keep up with the Wrasse , ended up using only one ledgered and spinning with a lead and 5 foot trace for the Pollack, Cracking Day and all from the yak. Ohh and the lobster pots well don't wanna talk about them Alright so: Set them on the way out baited with a full mackerel cut in four chunks this in to the small bait bag. OK there. Opened the long zip for taking ur catch out of the pot to release the 50' rope. Everything fine then all the fishing. On the way in first pot pulled nothing emptied bait and on to the second. Pulled it up to the yak nearly died it had a humongous edible crab its shell was the size of a small plate and legs as thick as my fingers, there was also a swimmer crab and another strap conger. Three species had to go for the camera, the flam-min camera :roll: so left the pot over the side of the yak to get the CAMERA. What a hadn't noticed yes you guest it the bloody zip was fully open. Never closed it after taking out the rope before setting it. AAaarrrhh! When I turned round with the BEEP BEEP BEEP all but the swimmer crab were merrily on there way, not even a blooming photo. Moral for today CLOSE THE BLOODY ZIP. Fantastic Day one not to be forgotten. All the best, Greywulff

Right you lot, Hows about giving us top tips on species, rigs and bait? All the info on yaks and tarting them seems to be foremost. But this kind of topic on the back shelf. I know to some of us this is second nature but maybe someone has adapted a rig or come up with a new one for yakking. This would be great info for all including myself. This rig has done very well for me for pollack and would be my first chioce when targeting them. FISH: Pollack RIG: Flying Collar, 2oz lead, 6'hook trace BAIT: Sandeel / Mackerel belly strip LURE: Redgill or Jelly-worm LOCATION: Rough Ground / Reefs BEST TIME: Dawn / Dusk but will fish though out the day TIDE: Hour before and after high tide. Hi all, Just a question tope fishing from a yak, First of all I have 12lb class rods, big multipliers, 15lb main line, 80lb rubbing trace (5') and 18 inches 40lb wire trace with a 6/0 hook all ready and waiting to have a go. But! And here's the question " What can I expect to happen once hooked up " I'll be at anchor so will have to release this to be picked up after, but what is the fight like and how long does it normally last and how far will I be towed . Hi Rob, Ur gonna get even more confused now I have the 874 THULE KAYAK CARRIER on Thule bars excellent bit of kit drove 250 miles with the yak on the roof and it didn't move a bit the rubber pads hold it very well and even have groves to expel water, hard enough to get on off from the back on my own until I fitted a bar parallel to the roof and fitted a boat guide roller on a bracket I fitted, just have to lift the front on to the roller now and push it up from the back effortless, and doesn't look bad. here's a link. Thule 874 Kayak Carrier I think it is worth buying a good set from the start cause if it flew off in traffic could kill or at least feck up ur yak. All the best, Greywulff

Instead of buying a new seat with a bag on the back I bought one of these bags from Argo Ireland for €9.99 at an Extra store. It has two water bottles a front meshed pouch and a good size compartment for easy to reach bits and bob's. Just cut off the waist strap and sow in place works great. Hope to tackle tope this year and could do with your advice on traces. Only ever caught a couple of them from big boats with 15' or so of rubbing leaders and cannonballs of lead and the like. Could some of my topeing hero's do a step by step of a trace for me. With lengths of trace and stuff. ie; wire or 100lb mono. Think you have the older version it the same as the one I have, Still no regrets. The threaded bung at the front is for emptying water from inside ur yak. The screw holes in the cockpit area are I think meant for those adjustable foot rests. You will have to do the inside transducer silicon thingy, but that's worth doing by itself great fun kitting it out Do get rear scupper bungs The flat area above the forward cup holder fits the Scotty mount like a dream, I added the triple mount. Very little restrictions as in Kayaking but you'll what to check out the Bye Laws on the Central Fisheries board HERE New Legislation has been brought in to stave off the onslaught of eastern Europeans whom are killing all they catch in this country at the moment. Hopefully these new laws will be enforced, but the fishing is free except on a very few waters for all course fish. All the Best Greywulff

Hi all, Anyone fancy giving me a hand to get these guys to give us a bit of space on there website forum. Looking for them to set up a category for Kayak fishing in Ireland it would be the first I think that deals with our sport in Ireland. Us locals could offer up our experiances and fishing venues for the visitng angler. We could also arrange meets, just the same as what goes on here. Not trying to take from this site but there is not many Irish anglers offering up Local Irish info and I feel this would help expand the range of our sport. Up the Yakkers we can only get stronger. Anyone suggest a good dry suit. I rushed in last year and bought a wet suit but the water in the northwest of Ireland never really gets that warm. You were right to look before you leaped Lloydus. Greywulff

I take it then were divided on this topic of net bags to keep fish fresh along side the yak although they may not attracted sharks they could potentially attract one and because it hasn't happened doesn't mean it won't. I'm not suggesting Great Whites but Blues or Porbeagles I hope to target tope myself from the yak but after this thread I think the net bag might stay in the wardrobe until it chum time. Can't help thinking what if? Big girls blouse eh. Think about it, you're out on the water ALONE with a net bag attached over the side of the yak full of kicking "KILLER MACKIES" and out of the blue so to speak ur yak gets violently pulled around the place for what seems an eternity and even if you don't fall in and the shark swims off with the net bag. What colour is ur shorts gonna be after that? We have all seen this right!
