Pollock are normally found as Macky says on rough ground, rocks with kelp wrecks etc. They can be caught on clean ground but this would normally be near rough ground. In my opinion their main hunting sense is sight and that is why they are easily caught on Mackerel or Cod feathers. If I am fishing for them and there close relative the Coal fish from my boat I make a rig like a set of Cod feathers but replace the feathers with Jelly worms. If I am fishing for them from the shore (Rocks) I would normally spin a jelly worm or I sometimes use a sand eel but I catch as many of the artificial as natural baits.

During the summer months we get very clear water up here and it is possible to see thirty and sometimes forty foot down. We have one reef that is a mixture of clean ground and patches of rock and weed. I have seen a Pollock near the bottom some twenty feet away from a jigged (Moved up and down) rig and within the blink of an eye it has dived for the rig and been hooked.

If you study a Pollock they have very large eyes and an upward pointing mouth and although they do work the bottom they are normally found under shoals of Sand eels and other fish attacking them from below at the same time as the Gannets are diving down for them.
