How much do I need to spend?

Haven't a Clue

Recommended Posts

Further to my previous thread, "Where Do I start" which has had quite a few welcome responses.

I realise it's like asking how long is a piece of string, but how little or how much do I reasonably need to spend to get myself started out on the bank?

I've heard stories (and stories maybe all they are) where someone went into a tackleshop, saying i'm just starting out, and i've got a £1000 to spend, whereby the shop duly sold him a £1000 worth of gear, much of which he didn't really need.

Obviously i've got a budget to limit myself to, and like with most hobbies, there's always something to spend your money on, but realistically, what gear did you start with, and what did it cost?

Thanks in anticipation of all replies.

All depends on what your going to be fishing for and in what type of waters so it's pretty impossible to say. You'll have to elaberate a bit.

I'll more than likely start off float or feeder fishing on the commercials or joining a club and using the lakes, and i'll be more than happy with anything I catch. I've seen some all rounder rods, are these ok, or would I be better getting seperate rods?

Hope this helps a little more

I recon about £100:

John Wilson Avon Rod or similar 2nd hand from ebay

Okuma Match Reel

A beginners margin pole

a couple or ready make pole rigs

A selection of floats and feeders

Landing net

Unhooking/Baby Changing mat

Disgorger and forceps

Hooks

Line

Shot

Some people take to pole fishing more than rod and reel and vice versa hence the suggestion of a beginners margin pole. If you haven't got a friend who can lend you gear for trialing I'd get both. I never thought I'd like pole fishing now its half of what I do.

I agree with rarepleasures on the figure of about £100 but I'd start with a 'normal' rod and line. Poles can come later if you 1) enjoy fishing and 2) want to try different methods.

A general purpose float rod with a reasonable fixed spool reel will be pretty versatile and will allow you to fish most lakes and rivers (even trotting at a pinch). If you like it and then want to specialise you'll then need to consider further expenditure.

At this time of year the most important thing is that you stay warm otherwise you will soon lose interest. I've a rod and reel going spare to get you started, you're welcome to them if you'd like.

Thanks for your kind offer. Until i've posted enough times i'm not allowed to private message you. I've only got a few more to go, and i'll be in touch, and hopefully come to some arrangement/agreement.
