Centrepins

Elton:

Okay, just got myself one of these (the wooden finish one).

Is there anything I need to do with it before I use it? i.e. lube it?

Can't wait for June now :D

Hmmmh ... nice! I agree with lubing, but the varnish on the veneer is another thing to watch.

I ended-up using teak oil on an old wooden star-back reel that I've got somewhere.

So, soon, you'll be Elton Wallis :D

Just the bearing Jim. I do not know what effect the GT85 might have on line so not worth the risk.

My standard approach, and I use match aerials so are quite open to the elements, is to take off the 'spool' and dry it all, and then remove all lubrication from the spindle and re-apply 3-in-one oil for normal use (legering for barbel) or GT85 if trotting.

If I feel the reels may have got grit or dirt in them I remove the spool and put the lot in the sink and wash with washing-up liquid. Thoroughly rinse and then leave to dry. Lubricate as before.

I have no reels with bearings but imagine the nly difference would be how to wash out the bearing - probably with lighter fuel as was suggested earlier.

sorry to waffle on

Mat Hillman:

There are two ball races, probably best to give both a clean in a solvent - lighter fuel, white spirit etc. Then you need to add a small drop of lubricant to each ball race - highly recomend the magic potion from Mill tackle, before re-assembling.

Mat

Sound advice, I will try that. Can't get any response from Mill Tackle, isn't sewing machine oil just as good?

Jim.

has or does anyone use one of those Milltackle centrepins?...the one on the homepage looks very nice indeed

I have used sewing machine oil for years on my pins and have always found it to be excellent.
