Leader

The leader is usually a length of tapered mono attached to the fly line before adding your tippet which the fly is then tied to. If not I am doing it all wrong.

The reason for the leader is that you cannot tie a fly straight to the fly line. The fly line is your weight if you like to be able to get the fly to the required spot where the fish are feeding/lying. The leader then rolls over bringing with it the fly( gently) landing on the surface ready for the taking.

Hope this clarifies things a little.
