fly lines

I have just finished putting a couple of new fly lines on my reels, and having spent the best part of an hour untangling them first I was wondering if there was a reason for fly lines in particular not to be sold on a spool which would unwind, but loosely coiled and held together with a couple of bits of pipe cleaner.

Am I missing something

Regards

Dave

Hi Rob

I had an Orvis which WAS spooled and was no bother at all. The other two were Shakespeare, so I suppose you get what you pay for!!

Even cheap fly lines are comparatively expensive and I would much rather they were on a spool rather than in a flashy box.

I did wonder if the reason might be the lines taking a "set" if spooled too tightly

I keep all my old spools which are usually in 2 parts. This means you can fit a coiled line onto them and reuse them for new lines which don't have a spool. Scientific Anglers seem to have the best spools for their lines.

Hi Dave as ff2 says SA have spooled boxes if set was a problem it would also be a problem whilst on your reel ,Yesterday Iused a wet cel line that had been on my reel for 4 years without use :) apart from taking it off the spool to wash it the night before it has had no maintenance no sign of set cast ok but it didnt catch any fish :)

Re lines not taking a set on the reel, thats what I thought, but I can't think of another reason/excuse. It P***** me off so much that packaging is now going to influence future purchases

air cel and wet cel lines are reasonably priced on the internet and are pretty durable, have used cortland lines in the past great lines but a tad expensive especially if they get stood on or burnt with a fag which has happened in the past :D

I know that feeling.

Havn't used the Orvis line yet, apart from dry casting on the lawn. It certainly feels good and I got it cheap on ebay. Intend to use it for my first fly fishing session for pike this year on Saturday. Weather looks OK for a change.

So much for fishing tomorrow. The Loch I had planned is flooded due to snow melt. I could have a day after salmon on the river, if I could find it! It's normally 20 yds wide - at the moment it's about 400yds wide, and rather fast!!!

The price of rising temperatures.

Still, there is always next week

Re your brothers pike, I had a 17lber on a 6 weight outfit and a size 12 Black Pennell on a local rainbow fishery last year. Thats about the most fun you can have fully dressed!!!

The owner is a bit more enlightened than most and encourages the safe return of all Pike.
