Hi John, the tippet as you say goes onto the end of the leader which your fly is then tied to.

 

If not using a tippet every time you change your fly you can appreciate the leader is going to get shorter and shorter, until the time comes when the leader is so short and thick you will not be able to get it through the eye of the hook.

So yes do use a tippet of about 3 to 4 foot then when it gets short all you have to change is the tippet and not the whole leader.

Join the two by using a simple loop to loop.

Well, just to confuse things further, the tippet is often used by the Americans to refer to what we often call the leader.

 

but, as to whether you have to use one, theres two options.

 

you could buy a tapered leader and attach a 'tippet' to the end, as described above.

 

Or you can simply attach a length of level leader/tippet to your fly line, then tie the fly on the end of that. Saves messing around joining lines together.
