Stevie, I would say that a mono mainline of 10lbs breaking strain would be the minimum requirement for general carp fishing. And you are correct that your hooklength should be the weakest link.

Usually used as a leader for pinning the line down behind your terminal tackle, so less chance of spooking fish and less chance of line bites. Also offers good abrasion resistance when situations dictate tough tackle. It can be fiddly to use and rigs should be tied correctly to avoid tethering issues. Many companies now offer ready spliced leadcore leaders which helps though.

Eat right, stay fit, die anyway.

In addition to aanthony's excellent description I would add that I would advise buying ready made - set length - leadcore with spliced loops at each end.

I have tried and used just about every leadcore on the market, ready made and make'ya'own, but I still use Big Fish Adventure's Kameleon leadcore, and won't use anything else!

I buy the BFG Kameleon in ready made lengths of 4ft, which has a loop as each end.

Simply tie your mainline directly to one loop - I use braid mainline so a Palomar knot does the trick.

The loop at the other end allows for a very versatile set up. As a Running Rig, for example, I simply thread the leadcore through the lead, then thread on a rubber bead to protect the leadcore, before threading the leadcore through the hooklink swivel, and then the hooklink through the loop. Pull tight - job done!

The same could be done through a Safety Clip.

Are you leadcore men not concerned about a fish towing it around if you get cut off or a snap of on the cast?

Like carping boy, I use sinking rig tube and a few turns of lead wire to pin my line down...that way if I lose my end tackle for any reason the fish can only end up towing a bit of line.
