one way Geoff is to clip up your rod before reeling in then, measure it off against your spod rod by walking the 2 lines down the bankside till you reach the clip and then clip up uour spod rod this will ensure the right distance for recasting to a spot noted on the far bank

If you are using a solid bodied spod, a Gardner pocket rocket or similar, top the spod up with water before you cast, this tends to keep the contents in.

If you are using a spod with drain holes in use a plug of groundbait or dissolvable foam.

Never fill your spod to the top 2/3 or 3/4 full is best.
