hi,

whilst visiting norway, i went out and purchased a telescopic spinning rod etc and have been fishing the last couple of days without a problem. this evening when packing up, the rod would not collapse fully and the end 'piece' is stuck. it won't budge anywhere, can't turn it, can't pull it out or push it back in.

so far i've tried vegetable oil, boiling hot water, a naked flame, lubricant (i.e. ky jelly), brute force using two people.

any other ideas? i can take it back to where i bought it but it's a bit of a journey.

all help is muchly appreciated, thanks in advance

My mate Bigears might be able to help.................if he's not sniffing old discarded clothing down by the river! :D

Sorry, couldn't be avoided! Try a certain carbonated vegetable extract drink that has nothing to do with cocaine as a lubricant and as sharp a rap on the end as you dare.

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Yep, its a mistake I made years ago !

Although telescopic rods were originally a good idea for those who travel, since the advent of good quality multi-piece travel rods (from beachcasters to light fly rods, with spinning rods, uptiders and lots of others in between) teles have become obsolete.

As you have found out, they stick.

Another grave disadvantage is that by their very nature the second ring down is too far from the tip ring, leading to line-wrap when casting. (Fly fishers will have this problem in spades)

They also break far too easily !

When I used teles, I used to carry a spare ring which I taped on (4 inches below the tip ring) at the beginning of each session, and removed when I had finished - but having to do that is a pain in itself.....

It probably isn't what you want to hear, but my advice is to bin it !

There are plenty of good travel spinning rods out there, and every one of them is better than a tele!

This was actually written with proper rods in mind but here goes.

DON'T tap the joint. You could create small hairline fractures in the carbon (well....fibreglass most likely...LOL!!. Here's some ideas.

Here's a few things you can try to separate seized joints/spigots.

1: Try pouring hot water over the joint for a minute and then pour cold water over the joint. A good sharp twist should dislodge it. Sudden expansion/contraction might allow the sections to slip apart.

2: Tie some elastic band round the blank, on either side of the joint. This gives you something to grip.

3: Get someone to hold one section, firm and steady, while you twist the other section.

4: Wave the pole gently overhead, like a fly rod. This sometimes allows the 2 sections to come free.

5: Try a Teflon lubricant, like GT85, sprayed into the join. Allow to penetrate for 5 mins, wipe clean and then try again.

Once you have separated your rod, to prevent it seizing again, rub the spigot with a soft graphite pencil. Anything softer than a 2B is ideal.

well, you're right - that's not what i want to hear. it wasn't cheap and i've only had it four days...

but thanks for the advice. my plan was to purchase a full size rod when i get back to the UK, the temptation of fishing here was too much.

i'll try using aforementioned fizzy drink :)

p.s. wrong bunk ;)
