Getting started in pole fishing

Hi guys,

Am interested in trying pole fishing, and have no clear idea what's involved. Would a cheap kit ebay offer like this one just disappoint in the end? If so, what might a beginner expect to have to pay for a good starter outfit?

It's not a lot of money but on the other hand it's not a lot of pole and I am sure that you would be disappointed with it very quickly.

My advice would be to get to know someone who pole fishes and see if they would let you have a shot, just to see if you like it, then work out what type of fishing and what type of fish you want it for. Get some local advice, probably from a tackle shop and don't be too worried about buying a second hand pole, you get a lot more for your money that way.

Good luck with it.

I would say its fine. I started out with a Middy starter kit and then swapped up for a Middy White Kuckle. Caught plenty on it. Fishing with a pole longer that 7-8m requires A LOT more kit in order to be able to sit comfortably, hold and control it. A margin pole is a good place to start.

Probably both. 6M will be a bit limiting and for that sort of money I would be surprised if the pole quality was up to much.

My first pole was a very cheap 8m and to be honest I used it twice. It almost put me off pole fishing completely, it was heavy and unresponsive.

I now have a 14.5m Maver that I bought second hand on this site and it is a completely different experience.

So which was the cheap pole? The one with the low price tag that I never use or the one that cost a little more and that gets used all the time.

Second hand quality is always better than new tat IMO.
