Drennan Series 7 Specialist Avon Quiver 12'

ello,

Im after my first rod after being out of the fishing scene for a few years.

I will be doing some feeder type fishing, either for barble / tench or carp.

I want a good all round rod which will suit me well, and is of good quality.

Does anyone here have a Drennan Series 7 Specialist Avon Quiver 12'? what do you think of it?

Ive got a couple of questions about the rod for anyone really, and these might seem abit... newby :P Apologise but im confused with a couple of things.

Firstly, with that quiver tip, how strong are they? or what size of fish could they handle upto? Im scared ill snap it....

Secondly, the Avon tip... that can be used for standard float fishing cant it? Can it be used with a bite alarm for maybe Carp? using feeders?

So the road is basically two rods in one, a quiver and a float rod?

Thats where im confused :(

I am really stuck on this and have been googling like mad :(

Thanks for any help received!

You can use the rod for both feeder work and float work. I recently got two in the 1.5 test but swapped them for the 1.25's as I have more powerfull rods ror when the rivers up. I think there quite good rods and worth the money.

I have one in 1.25lb tc - it's brilliant, go for it.

The 3 different quivertips are for detecting bites only - you won't snap any of them when playing a fish of any size. On a river, if the lightest one gets pulled round too far (so you're unable to detect bites), use the next strongest, and so so.

With the avon tip the rod can be used as a float rod or a leger rod with bobbins/alarms.

Yes, it's like having 2 rods - good eh!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Drennan specialist Avon 1.1/4lb

Pros

• Very versatile, but a jack of all trades master of none.

• Good value, get what you pay for.

• Luminous quiver tip, not as tangley as sight bob what’s it’s.

• Good rings, and reel seat

• Makes a nice roach and rudd rod

Cons

• Thin walled gutless blank, not very good at setting hooks, Swampy! I wouldn’t want to think about landing a double

• Far to much filler in the cork handle

• Tacky rod bag

Initially I thought it a bit tacky, it grow on me, and i quite liked it until it started to under perform with hooking and landing of larger fish. Plus I found some other short comings, I sold it recently.

What would you suggest instead?

I could be catching upto 15lb Carp in my local Lake and if you think the rod wont cope with that then i best start looking at other Avon rods?

John Wilson does one... what do you think of that Shanghai Lilly?

Sparkeh I reckon if your after double figure Carp the 1.25 would be ok but in waters that aren't snaggy but you should have no prob's landing a 15lb carp. It sounds like you may be better off with the 1.5 test model you'd be surprised at the power in it, it feels a hell of a lot stronger than the 1.25's. I think Shaghai was a bit over critical of the rod to me, imo the rods are decent quality and well worth getting.

Shaghai, you must have some huge Rudd and roach in your parts! That rod is far to powerfull for those species. A fine match rod is the tool for those species of fish as lets face it they don't exactly ripp your arm off do they ? My largest rudd is 3.3lb and if I'd caught it on the 1.25 test series 7 rod it would have struggled to put the slightest bend in the tip. I would say the rod is very well suited to fishing for large tench to medim carp and ideal for small river fishing or larger rivers in low water flow.

I use a Harrison’s four piece, and two piece Avon's for nearly all my coarse fishing these days, here’s a pair of reviews I’ve written;

Mine would bottom out with a 4lb bream; it lacked control, no torque, no back bone, just all floppy.
