Night on Trent

Decided to nip down to the River Trent yesterday afternoon(only a 3 hour drive) for a quick overnight barbel session. When i got there it was dry but the rain had followed me down the A1 and as soon as i started setting up the heavens opened. After a bit of running about getting my waterproofs on and brolly up i managed to get my baits out and almost immediately i got a screaming run, unfortunately i didn't connect with the fish but it gave me confidence. My two rods were twitching constantly and 30 minutes later one of my rods started nodding, resulting in a 5lb 8oz bream.Another hour of rain passed and another screaming run resulted in a 6lb barbel,a 3 1/2 lb chub shortly followed.

The rain eventually dissappeared bringing a cooler clear sky

Another run and a heavier fish,this 8lb 8oz fish

By 2am i'd had a few more fish including this one at 8lb 4oz

I reluctantly wound my baits in just after 2am as an early morning travel back home meant i needed a couple of hours shuteye.I set my alarm for 5.30 to get the baits back in and at 6am i had a slack liner. As soon as i wound into it i realised this was a heavy fish,it didn't really fight,it just slowly swam upstream using it's weight in the current, could this be my first double? As i took a couple of steps back to grab my net my rod lunged round and then went completely solid, nightmare, the fish had found a snag and after 5 mins of trying to pull it free from all angles,i went for the snap, which it did,i was gutted.

After that i caught another small barbel of 5lb and then it was time to go home.

  1.

Altogether i caught 2 bream,3lb 6oz/5lb 8oz,,,2 chub 3lb 8oz/4lb 12oz,,,8 barbel 5lb/6lb/6lb 4oz/6lb 8oz/7lb 4oz/7lb 8oz/8lb 4oz and 8lb 8oz...

Although i was happy with my catch i was bit annoyed about the one that got away(why does it always have to be the big one?)

What a horrible feeling that is. A very good session though, nice one, I'm glad the long drive paid off :) All but the smallest of those barbel would be a PB for me!

Nice one Wellyphant. ;)

Have you not thought of trying the Ribble, it must be a bit nearer (about 5 hours nearer) and has plenty barbel that go well into double figures.

Yes mate, have thought about it but i do like the Trent(not the journey)..Apart from that i don't really know the best spots on the Ribble(pm me some if you like ;) )..I am,however, waiting for a chance to re-join the PAAS,,once i have that i will definitely do more on the Ribble... If you sit anywhere on the bottom 25 miles you won't be far from a few barbel, its full of them. Try behind the Tickle Trout at Junction 31, you can get a day ticket from the garage there.

PAAS is a good club with some nice waters that will be good for that new pin of yours.
