Re the Moorhen above, I have always thought that they are very underated and dismissed by bird lovers...cracking looking bird.

Agreed. Smashing bird.

 

Dick Walker once wrote a hilarious piece about a moorhen called "Bert". Dick slung a few freebie lobworms to him, as he seemed quite friendly. Then he wound in his rods and went around to Fred's tent for breakfast.

 

Came back, and Bert had got in amongst the lobworm buckets.

 

"Bert waddled down to the lake and swam away, floating with a good three inches less of freeboard than usual" :D
