Any ideas what this fly is?

Seen this fellow on the wall, and have no idea what it is ... does anyone have any ideas? seen a few of them around this year.

 

 

and does it sting? It's a tough looking brute !!!

Looks like one of the bigger tabanid horse flys to me. Won't sting but will bite.
