Which river, what technique, we need more information. Without knowing that I can only suggest that you might and an Avon or stepped up Avon might be worth considering.

My experience of barbel tells me that your intended rod will be outgunned. I shall not enter into specifics but most purpose made barbel rods now come with a 1.5 test or 2lb test tip plus a selection of quivers and they don't break the bank. I fish a very difficult and snaggy river where hit and hold is often the way but I seldom use the heavy tip other than during floods and find 1.5 the best all round action switching to a quiver when bites start to become shy towards winter. Using the 1.5 still gives a bit of fun with chub.

Undercutting can break the bank, though. Does this mean that we should avoid discount suppliers?

Sorry, I'm having one of me turns again...:wacko:

As Peter said with out knowing specific information on what sort of river, technique, size of potential fish it is hard to give good advice. However a good avon rod can cover most situations.

However if you plan to do a lot of dedicated barbel fishing it may be worth investing in a specialist rod. I have a 1 and half pound TC Barbel rod and I don't do any barbel fishing but its a great rod for Tench. So it may be worth thinking about what else a new rod could be used for. A good barbel rod would cover Tench & Bream on a lake, Carp in a mud puddle and even fulfil its job as a river Barbel rod.

Hi Rodey, Much will depend on the nature of the river and predominant species. Have a word at your local tackle shop - they should point you in the right direction. I use rods between 14 - 20 ft long on the rivers I fish. It may be useful to look at a model that you could use at two different lengths. Anyway, enjoy your fishing - rivers are wonderful places to fish.

Hi Rodey, have you got any more info on this 12ft shakespeare match rod of yours, like a name or line rating?

Personally i wouldn't target barbel on the float with less than 4lb line and you may be better off with more like 6lb or more depending on the swim and their size. So you are going to need a rod that can handle that kind of line size.
