Any one been catching any Pike?

The start of the Pike seaon back in October seems so long ago. I was catching fish both Pike and Zander nothing massive, but getting my share of Pike to mid doubles. Then the cold snap came and my Pike fishing has been pants ever since. I have really struggled to catch any Pike since Christmas.

 

Am I the only person who can not catch any Pike at the moment? I went to the Warren last Friday with Jedibond and we both failed to catch a Pike despite seeing small Jacks in our swims. At least the bailiff informed us that no one on any of the lakes had landed any Pike that day.

 

I'm not giving up yet but time is running out and I am off to Wyboston at the weekend for some predator fishing, hoping for Zander but would be made up if I caught a Pike as I am starting to forget what they look like.

 

I think the Autumn Pike fishing was good for most people, but from talking to other anglers I know some have struggled over the last few months. So how has your winter Piking gone. It would be good to hear of a few fish being landed.

I haven't caught one double all season (June last year to this weekend) so I wouldn't stress about it too much!

 

As a final 'kick in the teeth' I found out a kiddie who works in the tackle shop had two 20s out of spots I've fished regularly for 4 years and have only managed up to 19lb (back in 2007). Using same tactics bait and everything...there definately IS luck involved in fishing!

 

In all honesty I'm getting quite tired of pike fishing these days...way, way easier for me to catch double figure barbel than pike into double figures!

Nope, I'm in the poor returns club, too. I've had a woeful time since before Christmas, also.

I remember still catching on lures in November but after that, I think I've had one measly fish and many a blank.

Much of that was down to poor venue choice, and a lot was due to bad timing, but given the conditions and work commitments it has been hard to get where I want to, when I want to.

 

Should really put up another thread but as this one is pike orientated, I'll jump on here:

Anyone have much success after dark? A lot of my pike fishing has been done after work hours. Looking at local catch reports, many were within an hour of dusk during the autumn months, but more recently the feeding time seems to be from 12-2pm.

I haven't had a run in the dark at all <_<

I think I've been way too lazy as well by just choosing to walk down to my local river rather than drive somewhere better/different!

 

I noticed bait fish being very localized as well which may have made things hard...on Saturday there were stretches of river that were almost devoid of fish (couldn't catch a single live) but others that seemed fairly well poulated...finding these spots was hard!

I've never tried for them in the dark, but I planning to do my first Zander fishing session into darkness this weekend. So it would be interesting to see if I get a Pike run. But with the way I have been fishing recently I am not holding my breath for much success.

 

I would not have been so disappointed by my poor recent Pike results if it was not for the fact I have done more Pike sessions this year then I would normally do and its been at the expense of the Perch fishing I like to do post Christmas. So not only have I had few Pike, but I feel I have also missed out on some good Perch fishing. That's the problem with blanking you always think that had you tried for a different species then maybe you would have been successful.

Like most the run up to the winter was very good for me.Also like most the rain and weather since has seen the piking patchy at best.I normally spend a lot of time after Christmas on the rivers (mainly due to the weed having died off) but the extra water has meant many a session has had to be switched to a still water.

 

The last week or so of higher pressure weather has seen a definite increase in sport though.Spawning has also seemed a bit behind on most of the venues I fish regularly.In fact the res fish have only really just got it all over with and they've normally done that by the end of Feb!

 

Not enjoyed the winters piking as much as usual and Im quite happy to stop now on still waters as well as the rivers.My thoughts are now definitely on the coming Springs Tench and Bream fishing.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Yeah, my Pike season has kind of ended of its own accord and I have 2 planned trips left this month and then Tench will be on my mind. Last year I done very little Tench fishing, so this year they are high on the priority list.

Not living in an area that has any coarse fish rivers has meant that I have struggled to get out often this year due to freeze ups etc on local lakes. When I have got out the water temperature has been well down on previous Winters since the start of December. Managed to get the odd fish when I have got out but I found lures and moving bait have outscored static dead bait perhaps due to the fish not moving about much. Had more blanks this winter too.

Never caught a Tench but I think with my declining interest in Piking it's time to hit up a local reservoir known for good tench (Cheddar) to have a good go!

 

Funny the piking as it definately has steadily declined since 2007...back then 4/5 doubles a session was commonplace...now your lucky to catch one! The big fish are still there as I heard but there's obviously fewer of them and they're harder to find!

Neil, have you thought about going to the Wingham fish-in? Really excellent tench fishing... a bit of travelling too, but worth it!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music
