I tied on a spade end hook hooked it over the scale hook and pulled the line (Daiwa sensor 6lb) slowly until it snapped. The sensor snapped at 7 1/2lb and then repeated the process with maxima chameleon 8lb and it snapped at bang on 8lb. Next I tried tying the line direct to the scales via a grinner/uni knot and got the same result. I trid it with nash bullet in 12lb (tied direct to the scale hook) and it broke at 17lb plus. I tried them all several times and got the same outcome.

 

This is a useful link when looking at different line B.S.

Just a word of warning! I believe doing this is very bad for your scales! Make sure you do it with a pair you don't much care if you ruin!

I have heard that before but I've also heard it doesn't do them any harm. It doesn't seem to have damaged mine anyway. I suppose if you did it over and over everyday it might damage them.

Yes good link that! Don't forget when comparing lines compare the diameter to breaking strength ratio rather than just stated b.s. to actual b.s. Some suppliers sell 'abrasion' resistant line which is just 18lb rebranded as 15lb b.s. not surprising when these lines have higher than stated b.s.

I used an old set of Shakespeare dial scales for my testing, I didn't want to knacker the Avons.

 

Rich, I haven't played around with your rig ring, or those micro swivels yet - and yes, I have settled on the wassitcalled knot :D On the combi rig, it snaps at the wassitcalled knot at just over 10lb, and the end by the knotless knot is severely stressed and about to go then too. By the way, a single overhand loop in the stiff mono is plenty strong enough, and much neater.

 

Turns out 10lb of pressure isn't actually that much at all. I can fish those leaders with a clear conscience now too, if anything ever goes it'll be the last couple of inches of the braided hooklength.

 

PS Mark, nice crucian article - I wish there was somewhere around here I could fish like that again!

I think we can get to carried away with rig strength/tests.

When you think about it every rig we use on the bank has a giant spring attatched in the form of a rod.

 

I think Terry has hit the nail on the head, our rigs are hopefully never put under that level of strain. The rod should cushion the fight/weight and if the clutch is set correctly the amount of strain that you could create "in lab conditions" should not occur.

Yes that is true, but if I hadn't tested a rig with those little rig rings and diamond eye swivels I would have definitely lost fish!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Yeah it's well worth putting the extra effort in to testing rigs, especially if trying out new rig making materials.

Exactly! Its also makes a real difference testing different knots etc when using new materials as its a bit late when you are left looking at the fish of your dreams swiming away as the rig goes at the net!

 

I spent quite a while doing this testing a few seasons ago when I just couldn't find a suitable hooklength or knot.

 

Don't forget that whilst when you are playing a fish the rig doesn't get these sorts of pressures they do during the intial bolt of the fish against the lead and also if the lead gets stuck in weed or on the bottom and it is exactly this sort of short sudden pressure that will break short hooklengths, particularly braided ones! During my rig nightmare a few seasons ago I had a tench break the hooklength on the take more than once!
