It took me several spinning trips before getting any sign of success - i.e. follows and takes - and a couple more before I actually caught anything. At the time I couldn't perceive how this technique would ever work and was convinced I'd never land anything, but once I'd caught a few I was a believer! Now it's my most common type of fishing simply because it's perfect for short mobile sessions.

Keep at it!

Derek

Lots of skills to enjoy when lure fishing :)

Like golf, darts, billiards etc there is marksmanship.

Dropping that lump of wood/metal/plastic just where you want it (more or less!) is most of the fun.

Then there is the retrieve, getting that thing to dance like a puppet on a string, exploring beneath the water, working in a way that you feel is right.

Sometimes I get so carried away just chucking and retrieving, exploring bits of water, I completely forget that I'm fishing, and it comes as a bit of a shock when something down there suddenly grabs hold!

Then there's the suspense that occurs when your marksmanship goes awry and you've got your expensive lure snagged up in a tree on the far side of the canal, a length of 15 lb breaking strain strung right across the water and a boat coming.

Leeds, two of the keys to catching on lures is to fish at the right speed and the right depth. Getting these wrong are probably the two main reasons why beginners to lure fishing don't catch too much at first. In particular, novices often retrieve too quickly and don't fish deep enough at this time of year.

The right speed will vary from day to day, but in general the closer it is to the ideal water temperature the faster it usual pays to retrieve, The water rarely gets too hot in the UK, so as a rule of thumb retrieve quickly in summer and slowly in winter. However, if this doesn't work it pays to experiment.

Getting the depth right is also crucial. If you use a floating plug that dives beneath the surface when you retrieve, you could well have chosen one that isn't diving to the depth where the fish are. Many times this is important, and you usually want your lure to be at the depth of the fish or a little above.

This means that you need a selection of floating plugs that dive to different depths and will need different ones for different waters. For this reason it's impossible to advise you what to buy without knowing the depth of your local fisheries.

At the very beginning, I'd suggest you fish a sinking lure like a spinner or spoon at this time of year. ABU supply some excellent models and are widely available.

It's important to engage the reel as soon as the lure hits the water as you might get a take as the lure sinks. This is becausec you need a tight line to be be able to set the hooks.

As the lure sinks, count or even sing to yourself. Try at different depths by counting to different numbers before beginning your retrieve. If you get a take you'll probably find that you'll get more at a similar depth until conditions, especially the light, changes.

Finally, make sure you hold the rod at the correct angle. I like it to be almost, but not quite, pointing down the line. That way you'll both feel more takes and also hook more of them.
