Some Lure Fishing Tidbits

US articles so mostly largemouth and smallmouth bass but I have found several good ones that should apply to pike and zander as well. The folks who wrote these fish professionally so if they don't catch, they starve (or find another line of work). Thus, they know whereof they speak.

Thanks Steve. I liked em myself.

I do have to wonder though. A few on here have admitted to practicing the solitary vice of lure fishing but not many. And those few not very vocal.

Makes me wonder if lure angling in the UK is one of those things we do but certainly won't speak of in public!! :D:D

I know there is a Lure Angling Society over there but any on here who are members seem to treat it like a membership in Alcoholics Annon.

This isn't meant to be any sort of wind-up either. It is just a thing that has made me curious since I first noticed it. And not only on this bbs by any means. Even the angling boards with a pred section have mainly bait discussions while I know the catfish is about the only pred that is really difficult to catch on a lure.

Newt, as you say lure fishing is practised by relatively few in the UK but the numbers are increasing rapidly, albeit from a small base.

I've lure fished myself for some 25 years and was one of the first members of the Lure Anglers' Society when it was very small. I did the first talk at the inaugral annual get-together and I think there were only about 25 in the audience!

Since then I've met a number of anglers who only lure fish, indeed I know one or two who have never ever used bait. When perch fishing I'll use whatever method is best on the day. However, my pike fishing these days is very much for fun and so the vast majority is with lures.

As I've mentioned before I'm an avid reader of US books and magazines, so if you've any other suggested links to internet articles I'd be very grateful, as I suspect will be several other regular posters and lurkers.

I can do that.

General tips for most sorts of lures.

Home Page for a magazine called "Inside Line" which is published by a bait company (Gary Yamamoto - the Senko guy). I take the magazine and love it.

Bass Fishing USA which has some good articles and a bbs (that I've not yet even looked at).

BassDozer's Site which has lots of goodies. He also published the free e-zine you can sign up for at the Inside Line site.

Pike & Musky Magazine page with some goodies you might enjoy.

Here is a walleye site with articles, tips, etc.

The experts reckon that less than 10% of UK anglers lure fish and probably only 1% of them are 'lure for the majority of the time' type fishermen. Very few of us actually take it seriously. The other day I caught a 30lb pike, the following weekend more than 50 anglers fished the place from where I was seen catching her. Not one used a lure!

Like Steve I am a great admirer of US style lure fishing so your info is always much appreciated, thanks.

I have often wondered why lures are not very popular in England, and it could well be to do with the expense.

In my youth I used to spend the whole of each winter (Oct to mid March) spinning for pike, mainly in rivers. The number of spinners that I lost was crippling. I used to have just over a £1 to spend each week on spinners and at 3/6d (17.5p) each the money soon went. Did catch an awful lot of fish though.

Adding to this, quite a few of my mates seem to have one spinner/lure in their box's and when bored they get them out and have a go, until they inevitably lose it on a snag.

Things are different now I think, we have extremely strong braids probably strong enough to open out the hooks and enable us to get out of snags. I only know one "fulltime" lure angler and he uses 50lb BS, simply to make sure that he does not loose £10 worth of lure.

Most anglers would not think to make the quantum leap to 50lb line, even though it is an obvious move.
