Piking in the Fens

Hiya,

Sorry if this has been asked a thousand times already!

I really want to target Pike this Autumn/Winter and wondered if anyone could give me some decent waters around the March (Cambs) area.I'm generally a Carp/Tench/Bream chap in the summer months, but really fancy a pop at Esox this year!

Any ideas? Also, I'm a bit worried about landing one and not being confident in unhooking it!Should I find an experienced buddy to help to begin with?Any help gratefully received.

There have been quite a few posts along these lines recently so i would recommend doing a quick search. It is definetly advisable to go along with someone who has experience in handling larger pike and can help you out if you get into trouble or deep hook a pike. A good place to begin reading up on some must have knowledge is HERE. Good luck.

Hi Fours,

theres a few good links in my signature(same site scopex suggested) to help you on your way but its highly advisable to go with a pike angler who knows how to handle pike. no amount of reading will ever prepare you when it comes to getting hands on with a 20+lb pike, even worse if its deep hooked.

Couldn't agree more. Even after you've seen and done it with 'supervision', your first few alone will make your bum twitch like a rabbits nose.

I still get the 'what if's?' with the first few each year.

saying that though id rather unhook a 40lb'er than anything under 7lbs im always paranoid about where hooks are in the mouth before i stick my hand in. something i dont think is mentioned in any "pike handling" tutorials ?

Cheers lads, much appreciated.Looking forward to the adrenaline rush!!

adrenaline rush starts to go away later on in the year once you caught a few which is a shame cause its a good natural high.

i hope when i get out piking at the end of October ive got it back.

my first double figure pike i caught on my own gave me the best buzz. i sat down for half an hour with the biggest grin on my face :)

Very good point, I think a lot of anglers new to Pike fishing worry about the big girls but I tend to find they are problem free. It's the little ones that seem to cause the most problems with unhooking and as you point out a greater chance of catching on your own tackle while opening their mouths.

I'm sure I'll still feel it for the first few years regardless!If/when I land my first double I'll HAVE to sit down cos my legs will be trembling too much to keep me upright!I'm 43 now and still feel the same rush I did when I was 13, regardless of the target. What a sport, eh?!
