Screw in quiver tips

PDB

Recommended Posts

I'm in the market for an Avon style rod for fishing small rivers for chub.

I'd like to carry as minimal tackle as possible and I'm considering an Avon rod with a threaded tip, to try and cover most float and ledger situations.

I wondered what the views are on screw in quiver tips, would it be better to go for a twin top rod?

Thanks in advance for any advice or views. :)

Screw in tips are inexpensive and versatile, especially as you can also use the rod without a quivertip or even with a swingtip. Some specialist rods have a different fitting with a quiver that slides over the tip. However, such set-ups will almost certainly have a flat spot. This can sometimes lead to bumped fish, or the fish feeling the changed resistance and spitting the bait out.

Interchangeable tips generally have a better action, but often the very heavy, and even more so the very light quivertips, still have a flat spot.

Best of all are separate top sections with different quivertips. I much prefer these as they produce the best action. So too did the England match angler who used some of my rods in my Caliber days. However these separate top sections are obviously more expensive - "so you pays your money and makes your choice."

I use a Drennan super specialist which has a screw

tip. It take 4-8lb mono or braid, has a 1 1/4 test curve progressing into a 3lb test curve toward the butt. I use this for freelining, float fishing, ledgering, light spinning and floater fishing with bread / dog biscuits.

It is very light to carry and I mostly use it when roving around rivers or stillwaters.

It has never let me down and is a joy to use.
