How do catch a netfull of carp/tench

Recommended Posts

This is probably a stupid question but are there any tactics you reccomend for a commercial carp fisherie around 5ft deep with carp ranging from 2-15lb ive fished it before but with no luck also would these tactics work for tench as well i usaually float fish but feeder seems to be the prefered tactic but i havent got a feeder rod i think a different approach is needed also is hair rigging a good idea under a float?

7 pints of white maggot, 1 pint red.

Fish a small crystal waggler 12 to 15 inches deep with 2 red maggots on the hook. No shot down the line.

From the moment you get there to the moment you pack up keep spraying maggots onto the water - the catapult should be barely out of your hand. If you get chance to put the rod down then put the rests at an angle and fish the float rod more like a feeder rod i.e. don't strike until the tip goes round! You can even try it with the bailarm off if that helps. You must keep spraying the maggots though because you have to attract the fish in and then hold them. On some venues you can get it so the fish just swim around with their mouths open hoovering the bait - it can be almost too easy!

Thanks for the reply but isn that to shallow or is that why you keep spraying maggots to bring them up in the water also will this tactic work in bad weather because i no carp come up in the water in heat but what about if its windy or rainy?

I would use a method float. Set it deeper than you usually would. Just off the bottom and use something like luncheon meat or pellets as bait. After a while you will not be able to stop em! If you do fancy usin this tactic try a dryish Van Den Eynde red method feeder mix. :)

What you're trying to do is get the fish competing for the bait. The fish come up because they want to get to the bait first. They become so obsessed that they'll literaly race each other to get to the maggots as soon as they hit the water and in their rush they lose their inhibitions. To be honest once you get them going you could probably put almost anything on the hook and still catch, but when using just maggot for some reason fishing red on the hook and feeding white catches more than using just white. As for different weathers, probably the only time I wouldn't try it would be in really heavy rain as I'm not convinced fish like being near the surface during a downpour.

The method float suggested by Hereford Angler is also a good idea and works to the same principle. You'd probably need a fairly pokey float rod to use it though (never tried it so not sure of the exact requirements).

If you're fishing a water similar to one I do and trying to bring the carp up in the water doesn't work very well you could give the lift method a shot. I have found it works really well with small soft pellets hair rigged and covered in van den eynde pellet paste, feeding a few grains of corn every five minutes. Bread flake is also a killer bait on this method.

Cheers
