Hair rigs whilst pole fishing

Does anyone one have any views on using hair rigs on small size hooks (16-20) whilst pole-fishing? What are the plusses and minuses?

I use 16's with a hair rig while pole or waggler fishing.

I normally fish a small cube of meat or a grain of sweetcorn while doing this.

I also use 16's with a tiny hair with a tiny wire attched for pushing through soft pellets.

Both these methods catch loads of fish as I get a good hook hold and a better bait presentation than if I were putting the bait on the hook.

 

I have not used smaller hooks or found the need to.

I read a piece on this by Mark Addy.

His yardstick is..If he's fishing on the bottom he may hair rig, if off the bottom....he never does.

As I mostly fish on the bottom with a pole, I'll make up some rigs this week. :cool:

yep - addy proves true . . hair rig on the bottom up in the water . . normal hooking . .

last week when I lost a hook on a pole rig the only hook length(i cannot tie hooks yet)I had was a hair rig,so I used it with a piece of sweetcorn and 2 red maggotts on the hook and 2 lovely carp

about 2 foot deep well off the bottom.

I was interested in why the guys say to use the hair rig on the bottom but plain hook up in the water?
