Books for Beginners

Recommended Posts

hi,

I have bought loads of books for beginners and the one i have found to be by far the best general book is 'The new book of coarse fishing' by allan haines and mac campbell. It was written sometime in the 90s. Don't know if still available. Unlike some books i have found, it tells you why to do certain things not just how to do it.

I'd recommend any of the general books that John Wilson has written. John not only deals with techniques, but also includes a lot of advice on the very important issues of watercraft and locating fish, which are sadly missed out in many books.

Hiya m8, try the John Wilson books that Steve recomends, I particularly like his course fishing method manual. Very informative even for experienced anglers , some stuff in there that you will really gain from. I have and I`ve been fishing for a lot of years now,and I learned one heck of a lot on river fishing, something that I rarely do is rivers.

Its published by Boxtree,& the price in the dust sleeve is £25.00,I picked up my copy from a book shop that specialises in selling books from bankrupt book sellers for £10.00. Shop around you will be surprised what you can find.

"Amatuers built the ark...........................................................................................................proffessionals built the titanic"

Apart from repeating the name John Wilson get yourself around the car boots the books there are cheap enough to make it worth while.

Recently I have seen three or four books doing the remainder rounds. Invariably called the complete guide to fishing they all appear to be collected volumes of books published in the early 90s, the Boxtree one is rather good. Catch Carp and Tench by John Wilson is a really good book as is Bob Nudds Pole Fishing book, I don't like pole fishing but I still enjoyed this.

We seem to be lacking at the complete beginner end of the scale. As I have mentioned before I got started when my father bought me the Ladybird book of Coarse Fishing which was a few pennies (old money!) and gave the absolute nuts & bolts basics. Also there are few books dealing with the intermediates, it took me a few months to work out what "the method" meant when I got back into fishing. Most of this kind of stuff seems to be dealt with by the likes of IYCF and the onther glossies, there could be some scope for a budding writer out there...

I'd have to back up what Derwent Bob wrote, especially as I write for 'Improve'. In my treks around fisheries, it has been mentioned several times, that an absolute beginners book would be a good idea, so I started writing one. So far, I'm struggling to find a publisher, but I would listen carefully to any offers of writing for a site if someone wanted.

As an alternative, could I suggest you contact the NFA and contact your nearest coach for lessons.

The best book I ever had for teaching me fishing was a modern (by late 70's, early 80's standards)equivalent of Mr. Crabtree. The book was Coarse Fishing, by Fred Rashbrook. It's a cracking little book, in a similar cartoon-like format, but there are loads and loads of tips on fishing, including methods of catching different species, tackle maintenance, etc. etc. etc.

If you ever see a copy, I highly recommend it.
