The CA and Angling.

I think our American visitors regard her as something of an icon, and would be grateful if you didn't divulge any knowledge you may have of her extra-marital activities.

English as tuppence, changing yet changeless as canal water, nestling in green nowhere, armoured and effete, bold flag-bearer, lotus-fed Miss Havishambling, opsimath and eremite, feudal, still reactionary, Rawlinson End.

Its a strange quirk of nature, Peter, that these young, immerging nations feel such a compelling need to iconise as many home grown icons as possible. With alternatives like Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock I suppose Whistler was the obvious choice.

Interestingly Whistler moved to London and was a 'buddy' of Oscar Wilde, which makes him a queer choice for iconisation by middle America.

Oh, it was the Mother who became the icon. What was her sir-name?

Could have been worse. He could have called her No.2
