Simply, I'm looking for advice on what laptop to buy. It will not be my main computer (the home PC will still be that) but I want it to be good enough to act as a stand-by in case this one ever fails, therefore it will need good (fast) graphics and processor. Since VAT is going up soon, it makes sense to buy before that happens.

 

Budget is £400 but I can go over that if it would mean buying a better machine.

i don,t know about there laptops but i am using and have been for 12 years a Mesh Desktop PC

never let me down started on win 98 then win Me and Now win XP pro

 

when new this was the mutts nuts at over £1100 , just imagine what i could get for that kind of cash to day .

 

so i would say Mesh are OK and so are Toshiba Satellite C650/650D got one for my son £329.00 from comet comes with win 7 64 bit

DVD duel format drive 360 hard drive etc very fast .

good luck in your hunt for one .

Has the same Graphics card as the Mesh. Anyone know if this card is upto gaming spec ?

In a nutshell no. It's from Intel (GMA X4500). Intel don't do gaming. If you want a laptop that can really do justice to games you need one that has something like a ATI Mobility HD 5870 in it. That's going to cost upwards of £1,100 which is a bit rich for me. Mind you some anglers spend more than that for a Maver fishing pole to catch tiddlers on a canal with.

I finally settled on the Toshiba Satellite L655D-12K. £480 so a bit more than I was going to spend, but it's a good machine and I wrangled a free case with it (would have cost another £30). Just got to spend a couple of days configuring it to the way I want it now :mellow:
