I can't seem to find a company that does totaly barbless trebel hooks. Fox and a few others do semi barbed which is great for dead baiting but what happens when you want to lure fish? All my lures have barbed trebels! Ok i do close the barbs with pliers but why doesn't anybody just sell them barbless :( ? Im a big fan of the barbless hook. :P

You might be better off crushing all 3 barbs on your lure hooks and leaving bumps, rather than using totally barbless. This gives you a bit more security against the hooks falling out, and they are still easy to remove. Don't forget to carry a set of mini bolt croppers to cut the hooks out if you have a problem unhooking. For deadbaiting you

could use double hooks instead of trebles, I find that hardly any fish fall off and they are easier to remove

A number of people condemn barbless trebles, claiming that their less secure hold leads to ripping.

I always use crushed barbs, the hook goes in far easier (try barbed and crushed barbs out on a piece of chamois leather), the residual bump gives a fairly secure hold but there are no problems in removing the hook easily (from the pike, yourself, the car upholstery and your clothing!).

I became so fed up with the hassle of unhooking small pike when using two trebles that I have tried all kinds of combinations. I tried using double hooks, but I found that the staggered ones of the VB variety were sometimes more difficult to remove than trebles. I am experimenting at the moment with a rig comprising a size 8 barbed single, which is there purely to hold the bait, and one size 6 semi barbless treble about two inches below it. The barbed hook of the treble goes into the bait.

I think barbed hooks cause far more damage than barbless, although the worst damage is caused be double hook rigs where the top treble is not securely fixed, or even allowed to slide. If a pike is hooked by both trebles on such a rig, the strain on the main line puts opposing forces on the two hooks, trying to force them together. Always make sure that both hooks are rock solid.
