priest?

Hello all,

 

Can anyone tell me the derivation of the word 'priest' as related to angling, and how this came about, I know what it is but how did it get its name?

I've always assumed it's because a priest gives "the last rites" to a fish.

That's my understanding too.

Probably because you administer the 'Last Right's'

to the fish with it, just like a Real Live Priest may do before a person dies.

I have seen a few priests in my time that looked like they might give you a good whack, no offence intended to all those angling priests out there,

come to think of it what a good job, plenty of fishing time midweek but screws up the matches a bit.
