Barbel rods, Carp rods, Pike rods, Chub rods. Does anyone actually own a rod for each

I could never understand why anyone would need separate rods for carp and pike fishing. I use my 2.25 pound tc rods for carp, pike and barbel fishing, although the barbel fishing is on waters such as the tidal Trent, which bears few similarities to barbel fishing on smaller rivers. I would also use them for eels and catfish, if the latter did not run much above twenty pounds. I used to have a couple of 1.75 tc rods that I used for chub, tench roach and bream fishing, although they must have been considerably less powerful than the ones of that class now available for barbel fishing.

When I first started out, I had a twelve foot Hardy Matchquest that I used for absolutely everything, even wrasse fishing off the rocks near Durdle Door in Dorset. I also used it for deadbaiting for pike, which is how I broke it :D

English as tuppence, changing yet changeless as canal water, nestling in green nowhere, armoured and effete, bold flag-bearer, lotus-fed Miss Havishambling, opsimath and eremite, feudal, still reactionary, Rawlinson End.

My Pike rods are 2 3/3tc and do get used for carp on bigger waters. Most of my local carp waters are only small ponds and for them I use 1 3/4tc rods.

I bought the carp rods years ago for fishing my local ponds and occasionaly used them for Pike, but they jusy arent up to the job of casting big Pike baits a long way, hence the need for Pike rods.

OK, I did a quick inventory and came up with the following :

1 quivertip rod (unbranded)

2 heavy feeder rods (Silstar, Leeda)

1 medium feeder rod (Drennan)

1 twin-top Avon rod (Masterline)

1 1.25lb Specialist rod (Masterline)

1 16' float rod (Drennan)

1 13' stick float rod (Daiwa)

1 12.5' waggler rod (Dam)

1 12.5m pole (Shakespeare)

1 5m whip (Daiwa)

1 3m whip (Silstar)

2 3lb TC carp rods (Dam)

1 2lb TC carp rod (Leeda)

2 1.5lb TC carp rods (Daiwa)

2 8' 2lb TC stalking rods (Masterline)

2 Pike rods (TC around 3.25 I think) (Mitchel)

1 10' heavy lure rod (QED)

3 8' spinning rods (Daiwa)

4 6' baitcasting rods (Masterline, Shimano, Abu)

2 6'6" baitcasting rods (Smimano , Abu)

1 Nile Perch rod (QED)

2 8' telescopic boat rods (around 15-20lb class - vundu rods)(Dam)

Most of the later rods have been bought for fishing abroad, and then having to buy again because they weren't right the first time!

The oldest rods are the 1.5lb carp rods and they're about 17 years old I'd guess. Actually I'm quite surprised how many carp rods I have given that I've given a few away to friends abroad and I've never been an out-and-out carp angler either.

Favourite rod is without doubt the Drennan Medium Feeder, although the Dam Carboron waggler rod is pretty Dam good, and the Daiwa stick float rod is a real Rolls Royce of rods!

I do have rods for almost everything I do but I have to say that I used a spinning rod for every type of fishing going and I caught plenty of everything.I do realise that species specific rods are best for the job usually but if you are happy doing what you know best then power to you. My mate uses 16's and 4 lb break and a spinning rod for EVERYTHING but I would never try to educate him.He know all the gizmos and tackle rigs going but rarely applies them and he has some wicked Pics and bag-sizes.
