Lightweight match rod

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a lightweight match rod. Used souly for float fishing. 2lb main line. Catching silverfish with the odd 2-4lb bream/tench/perch. Length around 12 & 13ft.

Can anyone recommend a good lighweight, well balanced rod? Ive looked at shakespear mach 3 and others along similar slim, lightweight designs.

Ive looked for the Normark range rods, mostly on ebay and the rods in mint condish can be very costly. Cant say ive seen a Microlite on there for a while.

I have been looking at a fue shimano rods, they do 3 or 4 rods that are reasonably priced and meet my fast action light weight match needs:

Shimano Vengeance Fast Action Match Rod

Shimano Catana Fast Action Match Rod

They do come up for sale quite often. I know they're not cheap but if you want the best you've gotta pay for it.

I'm also a fan of drennan rods and like the im9 and im8 range of wagglers. I know drennan do a modern version of the im9 which I would imagine are good (personally i'd keep my eyes peeled on fleebay for an older model).

Here's a couple in the latest range....

Thanks for those links.

I will have a look at those rods. I too like the drennan range. I have a series 7 competition feeder and Carp Power Waggler.

In the mean time I will have to visit all the local fishing shops.

Thanks

Hi

drennan do a new series 7 match rod with the 2 peice construction and dolly butt. It is a very good light silver fish rod at a good price. I have the slightly heavier tench and specialist float with the same design of butt and 2 peice construction and find the method of creating a 13ft rod that is 2 peice well worth it.

I find the action through a 2 peice rod to be better at this length than a 3 peice.

regards

Shaky Mach 3 all the way for me, if you search the site you'll find it well regarded.

I have the 13' XT paired with a Spro red arc, a very good, lightweight, well balanced rod with an excellent action and if you shop around, you can pick one up new for under £80 (comes with a clear rigid plastic tube, 2 neoprene rod bands, cloth rod bag and a quality zip-up rod sleeve which you can use to store the rod and reel made up) or look for the previous model on ebay for half that, both use the same blank, got to be a no brainer!

The Normarks are class rods (I have one) but they are going for stupid money and I find that I use the Shakespeare far more because it feels so good, deffo my favourite rod!

Thanks for the help.

Im going to a local shop in wiltshire tomorrow to have a look at both: Shakespear mk3 13ft match lite and the Drennan im9 finesse 13ft.

Will get to hold the rods and check them out. Get a feel what they are like. Hopefuly will go well, then I can shop around for best price or shop discounts.
