Ruffe With The Smooth

Hi

I promise never to use this forum as a means to promote my blog (no bugger reads it anyway), but I did think that this might make you laugh. It makes me laugh - albeit slightly hysterically.

On the plus side - I've never caught a ruffe before.

And why are they also called a Pope?

And why are they also called a Pope?

Fifty years ago, if you used maggot on almost any of the middle and lower stretches of my local rivers, you got pestered with ruffe.

Nowadays, they seem rather scarce. In fact, when I wanted one as part of an annual species hunt, I had to work pretty hard to get it.

Don't know for sure why they are called Pope, but there was a rather cruel practice in early Victorian times called "Corking the Pope" in which a cork was impaled on the dorsal fin of a Ruffe, and then it was set adrift, so it was trapped at the surface and eventually provided a meal for a pike - so there might have been some religious bigotry at the back of it.

...and yes your blog did raise a smile here.

I have been surprised by the amount of Ruff I have caught recently on the Lea as it had been years since I caught one. No doubt at some point I will get tired of catching them but at the moment it's rather exciting when I catch one.

Guys,

We have a lot of Ruffs in our lakes and small rivers. They can help Anglers to win winter competition in Russia because the score is kept in pieces of fish.

I was actually quite pleased at the ruffe - never caught one before, more of a stillwaters person - but this is, I'm afraid, just looking like bullsh*t from a saddo in the face of such a whopping perch caught by a 7 year old.

It's a bit like the Sorceror's Apprentice - but in reverse.
