Just picked this up from BFW.

quote:

Have you noticed that in pictures on magazines and in his programmes Matt more often than not plays fish and then beaches or takes them out by hand. I know he is a more than competant angler but surely it would put across a better message for him to use a landing net most of the time. As inexperienced anglers use these programmes and magazines to try and pick up tips. Just my opinion what do u lot think?

Any reply Matt?

Any net sized fish should be netted full stop.

I have tried to line fish in and had some nasty accidents (broken hooklenghts, dropped fish, hooks in my hand and almost broke a rod).

Landing nets are designed to land fish.

Whats the point in having one if you dont use it!

I do swing small fish upto 8oz by hand during matches but thats it.

I agree with Rudd on this one. Any fish much longer then my middle finger gets netted, only the very smallest are swung in. When swinging in to your hand however, it is also important to wet your hand first to prevent taking the slime off the fish. After all, it is the fishs' first line of defence against fungal/bacterial attack.

in most angling club's yearbooks, it is now a requirement that you must not fish without a landing net.

I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness I can show to any fellow - creature, let me do it now, let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
