drop-off indicator help & S Burke

Hi again

Anyone any idea on best resistance free line release clip for a backdrop indicator? Found an old thread on here where someone asked about drop-off indicators. Steve Burke advised the Fox swinger arm ones but commented that he changes the line release clip. Thing is he doesn't say what type he changes to. I personally find the line clip on them a bit fiddly and if you dont set right can suddenly get resistance as line pops out on a run, which can result in dropped runs for perch.

Anyone able to help? Does Steve Burke still visit this forum?

From memory he recommended the Gardner tackle run clips.

I replaced mine with some from Solar who now do pivoted PFTE coated versions, these might be worth a try.

I have coverted mine to use the Gardner run clips as well much less fiddly than the gate thing they come with.

It's the Gardner free flow indicator that Steve B uses:

Steve is still a member but has been very busy lately, so doesn't post much at the mo.

I personally like the Solar line clips - steel ball clips where extra weight doesn't matter, and plastic for when it does (like using bobbins for perch).

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

A lot depends on what mainline you use ie mono or braid. Line clips that worked fine with mono proved useless with braid when it comes to showing drop backs (the whole point of the indicator!) The "rougher" braid tends to "stick" in the jaws of some plastic type clips. The Gardner Free Flow ones ain't to bad but I prefer to use modified original Gardner clips (terrible for braid without the modification though) You can buy them ready modified but its quite easy to do it yourself.

Steve was asking me about this modification recently (well this year any way!) so he may have been having problems with his Free Flow's or isn't 100% happy with them.I cant remember.I will ask next time we speak and let you know.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Cheers Budgie. I have bought one of the Solar PTFE as recommended by Rob to try. If I am happy with it I'll buy more for the other rods. Be interesting to know Steve's opinion though as you say. I thought the Solar ones sounded interesting as thay are adjustable so "should" be able to adjust them to account for the braid I use, but I'll have to wait and see. I'll let you know how I get on.
