JRC 60" brolly

I have been offered one of these at what seems to be a very good price.

http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/jrc-60-inch-oval-brolly-p144959

I wanted a shelter really for long days with very occasional summer overnighters ( i won't be sleeping in it ;)), easy to put up / take down.

My first thought was a pram hood type shelter but this is available. The problem is I have never seen or used one so I am buying blind.

Anyone with experience of oval brollies in general and this one in particular?

I have seen the pictures and the video so I am more interested in personal experience.

Thanks

I have one of the JRC oval 60" brollies and its been one of the best buys I'ver made. I also do an awful lot of winter foul weather fishing and I've got to sat once I'm behind the oval its 6 or more degrees warmer as the wind does'nt cut through the brolly material and the side wings keep all the wind away from the brolly unlike the conventional brollies where the wind whips round the side

The ground pegs are a must though to ensure stability in strong winds, in fact the brollies so good, I bought another one when they were on offer "just in case"

Hi Sportsman,

Yes I have one of these, I like it lots! I used it for several years for overnight sessions etc. It is very quick and easy to setup etc. I do have a few minor niggles (all of which are minor!)

It began leaking in the centre of the brolly hub but 5 minutes and a little seam sealant and it was (and still is fixed).

It is quite cosy for all the bits for 2 or more nights (but you won't need all that lot)

As it is a brolly the spokes etc etc do take up some room inside.

If you want I could pop it up and take some pics if you want more details?

I still use it for short sessions but prefer one with a front for the unpredictable Wingham weather and the bloody mozzies!

P.s. in terms of speed of putting it up a standard brolly like this will be hard to beat!

Hi Rich

Thanks for all that.

I am happy with what it looks like and was more concerned with build quality, usability etc.

Sounds like I should have no worries on that score so I will go ahead and get it bought.

Thanks again

Right, the guy selling the brolly seems to be playing hard to get so may have to look at some options.

I have been offered a JRC 1 man Contact bivvy. The front of this zips off leaving a shelter, which is what I really wanted initially.

Anyone have an informed opinion.

Another shelter is the Wychwood Flexi rib pram hood style shelter. Good price but fibreglass poles. Is that a problem?

lastly the Korum Mk11 shelter. Bit more expensive but good reviews.

Or should I stick it out for the 60" brolly?

Thanks

I know from my previous rude postings you may not be interested in my opinion but as i have something to offer and in the interest on AN harmony I thought I would give it a go anyway.

I have 2 dayshelters and 2 bivvies and they all seem to have different uses. The first dayshelter I bought was a trakker a lite which is pram hood style shelter.

The first time I looked at it I thought how on earth does this go together but after erecting it once I was hooked on the pram hood style design. They are very quick to erect and so stable. I often only put 2 pegs in the back and actually really enjoy fishing under it. If there are walkers or other anglers about it gives you your own private space. Its that feeling, when a child, of getting in a tent and feeling cosy.

I have 2 full 1 man bivvies but these are for weekend stays and of no interest to you but my fourth is the korum mark2.I bought this because its not as deep as my trakker and some swims I need to get on are small. It has 2 ribs instead of 3 and will fit in a rodbag. Its even easier to erect and is made of a very nice material you can feel it will be waterproof for a long time.

The other advantage is it is higher on the front so if you are tall it gives plenty of headroom. Again extremely stable in very windy conditions and easy to take down in the wind you just drop it down towards back before unpegging and once on the ground you are wind free.

The only problem is the bag is a little narrow so the longest part of taking it down is getting it back in the bag although if folded neatly its not a problem and obviously a bigger looser bag would make it more difficult to put in a rod bag.

A zander angling friend had been using a daiwa mission brolly but on seeing this has now bought one of these.

They very rarely come up 2nd hand on ebay a testament to their value. On the same note if you bought one and did not like it you would be able to sell it easily.

Moving from an umbrella to a shelter was a revelation no more fighting with it all day long.Am umbrella always seems to move come loose spin round etc a day shelter stays put.

I have one and I think it's excellent value for money - good quality material, strong pegs and shock-corded poles that don't need threading. I spent the first weekend in December last year out in it and was very comfortable. It's quick and easy to put up and despite being single skin, doesn't seem to suffer too much from condensation.

I've also spent a night of torrential rain in it and stayed dry. I don't do overnights very often so didn't think it worthwhile buying a more expensive bivvy - this one does everything I need.

p.s. You can also roll up the front and sides and secure them with a strap if you want an "open shelter" - you don't even have to go to the trouble of zipping sections off!

Thanks again for the input.

In the event the guy with the brolly got back to me last night and the deal was done.

I got one of these, 6 months old, used 3 times and with extra long storm poles for 35 quid and 15 quid postage to France.

It should do everything I need :)

If there is anyone else looking for a similar bargain these might be of interest
