I must be lucky or something... I never (touch wood) get popups and find anything other than the occasional tracking cookie. So here is my question. What sites are you guys going to and what are you downloading????

I don't know that I visit any sites or download anything that would be considered to be risky but I sure as hell get a lot of spyware in my computer, some of which can make it do pretty flakey things at times. Unless you do frequent scans to eradicate stuff like that you may never know it's there but one day it will turn round and bite you - often just after you have downloaded or installed a new programme of some kind.

I only run symantec internet security 2008 (virus updates once a week with full system scan) and that is behind my routers firewall. IE7 has a popup blocker.. But I don't frequent hacker or porn sites either. Of course I haven't been in any accidents lately in the car.. Oh well. Nevermind.

I'm more likely to have my accounts broken into and my identity stolen.. Not that I need any more excitement.. With the world ending in August maybe I should max all my credit cards too...

Everything bad that has ever got onto my PC at home has been put there by the kids! The one good thing about that bloatware Vista is that it is now very hard for them to do this. Add ons to MSN and IE Toolbars were the biggest culprit. If a kid was presented with the message "Do you accept the installation of 100 pieces of Adware included with this highly useful cartoon message? (Yes/No)" they would select Yes!

with my experiences it always happens when ive used explorer. it can be a totaly legit and friendly website but whos owners do not care about the adverts they put on their website which causes all the problems.

it can be as easy as yahoo.com allowing some 3rd party advertising company to install a toolbar for IE and from that little toolbar the people who created it allow other companies to hit you with popup adverts and from those popup adverts you get yet another toolbar if not worse

plus what collin said, ive seen this on my mates computer and had to rid it of the adware hundreds of times. it always seems to be these sparkly screensavers and msn plus

other than that i got hit with alot of adware by going to prn websites using IE, since i got firefox i can download all the prn i want :D

As has been said I have not had ANY sort of infiltration since I started to use FireFox as my browser. I had to use IE last week for Vistaprint. But scanned right away to be sure! So I would have to say using IE is the problem.

And I have recently used a porn site AND paid $2.38 to join it!! (It was actually a P2P site payment disguised as a porn pass payment!!!

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

I rarely use any browser other than Avant and I don't go to porn sites or free music sites, any music I download I pay for at iTunes. I don't know where I get the spyware from, but unlike adware, it doesn't show its self. As far as I can see you don't know you have it until a) it starts buggering things up or B) you find it in a scan. I used to have Symantec but I dumped it and I have now bought Panda. I don't remember Symantec ever alerting me to the fact that I had spyware in my computer, but Panda frequently finds it and eradicates it for me. Try one of the free spyware trackers and see what it finds. You might be surprised.

I use IE without any problems, I also have a subcription version of AVG and I use CCleaner. Vista currently appears to be security mad even issuing warnings when installing MS products.
