Dodgy 'Barclays' Mail

Elton

Recommended Posts

Just received a really weird email, the purpose of which eludes me:

a. I'm not a Barclays customer.

b. It was sent to an address harvested from this website, not one of my regular email addresses.

Anyone seen it before?

Sounds like a similar email sent to AOL customers asking them to confirm their payment details.

All you had to do was to enter your Credit Card Number, name, date of birth, password etc!

Of course it all looks fairly/very convincing, and takes in quite a number of gullible folk who then find items appearing on their debit/credit card, or their identity 'stolen' for other purposes.

Be careful out there!

I've had a couple like that purporting to have come from various banks (Citibank was one). Take a close look at the link. I've found that whilst it may display www.barclays.co.uk or similar in the e-mail, when you actually put your mouse on it the address it displays in the bar at the bottom of the screen is different. Not sure precisely how they do it but if you click you end up at a site that looks like the bank in question but isn't.

I notice on the BBC news site that Barclays have finally issued a warning about this scam. Originated in Baltimore apparently.
