Wouldn't be a tax - would be a tightening of the regulations the water companies discharge treated sewage under, followed by a negotiation between Ofwat and the (largely foreign owned) companies over how much they are allowed to put our bills up to pay for it.

When this is such a specific problem, i.e the toxic impact of contraceptive pill manufacture, and the issue is actually proven rather than just a theory, surely it would be simple enough to point the finger of guilt / culpability, and most important liability, at those concerned: the manufacturers of the pills? Without digging into Google, I would imagine that collective profits can be counted in billions over the years, so would it be too much to expect that they fund their own clean-up ... or is that too straight-forward, logical and simple for the bureaucrats to get their heads around?

Worth pointing out that the pill is but one of very many sources of oestrogen mimicking pollutants.

Edit - should also add that human sewage contains naturally occurring oestrogenic hormones even without the aid of the pharmaceutical industry. Not like the Guardian to miss that kind of information out ;)

In addition to Steve's post, here's a synopsis on this type of pollution: http://www.informyourself.com.au/oestrogen.html

Blimy, there's me being led to belive that it's comerants, goosanders, otters and the influx of poles that leads to a shortage of fresh water fish. Even the trust was paid some 30,000 quid with regards to the poles, now it boils down to the pill. Amazing what a bit of sceintific funding will do, whatever next.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

Hummmm, how come this powerful pollutant, causing feminising of man, low sperm count etc, etc. Until modern times our population count was 50 mil, now it's heading for 70. Epidemic?

quote: They are also dangerously toxic. The legacy of this pollution has resulted in an epidemic of reproductive abnormalities, including the steadily increasing number of cancers of the reproductive tract, infertility, low sperm- counts, poor sperm-quality and the feminisation of males.

Quite apart from the health risks to the human population, my thoughts were related to the apparent general increase in fish sizes. Considering that it allegedly causes feminisation of our finny friends, and that the females are generally bigger... I'm not saying there's any truth in it; it just seems to add up.

Ahh, are you talking about captive fish in ponds, that appear to be well fed on ground bait by any chance? Any reports of carpy captures of say 30-40lb ders in rivers for example.:)

And these ponds, are they fed by second hand river water or are they filled with rainwater and run off's by any chance. :)

Us salties capturing larger fish, most always find that the bigger ones are females as well, cod, pollack, bass, conger eels, tope.

I was thinking more of river reports, Barry. The size of perch, barbel and chub (in particular) seems to have shot up in recent years. I know that these increases can be cyclical, and due in some part to the success of certain year groups, but maybe there are other (thus far unexplained) factors at work.

If more of the fish are changing into females and so outnumber the males, then you would expect a general increase in overall size since female fish grow bigger. It's pure conjecture, though, and I don't have any factual evidence to back it up.
