feeder fishing without baitrunner

What is feeder fishing?

 

Is it using a feeder be that cage, method the new super duper match release from Preston etc guarenteed to catch twice as much fish as last months new super banjo mold cage thingy ever could.

 

Is it using a quivertip?

 

Or something different?

 

I am a big fan of fishing multi rod set ups Carp/Specimen tactics on pods/alarms extra using feeder rods for Bream, Tench and Roach but I do not consider it feeder fishing in its purest sense. It's more that many "feeder" rods are decent tools for the job of casting small to medium feeders, bags etc and still have a nice action for playing a fish. Plus most of my lighter gear just happens to be feeder rods. I use bait runners as with this style of fishing I use more then 1 rod and it is often over a long extended period of time.

 

However if I was going "feeder fishing" then it would be a feeder rod and feeder on the line and bite recognition would be watching the upper part of the rod and so need of a bait runner function but saying that most Shimano Bait runners are nice reels to use anyway even if you don't need the function.

 

As for striking with a bait runner open, it's been many a year since that has happened. I have become institutionalised in the way of Carp/Pike/Specimen fishing. I cant pick up a rod with out either.

 

a) one turn of the handle to enage the drag and turn off the bait runner

 

B Cup the spool when striking and then going to put the bail arm down or turning the bait runner off.

 

C) looking to close the bail arm

 

Even when feeder fishing and watching the tip, I have a habit of cupping the spool on striking. No matter what reel I am using even a match reel, my mind thinks open bail arm or baitrunner. Rather sad really
