Bobbin clips

Hi all,

I was looking into making my own bobbins, after seeing someone on the bank with bobbins made of balsa wood and painted orange. The clip for going on the line was not homemade, but he didn't say where he got them from. Does anybody know where I could buy some? An ebay search of 'bobbin clips' brought no luck, but I don't know if that's the correct term. If anybody has got any idea of where I could find some i'd appreciate it. Also does anybody know which shops would sell balsa wood?

Cheers :)

I use and like Gardner Freeflow clips, partly because they're easy to adjust, partly because they work well for perch (many don't). Here's a link to one firm that sells them:

I gather that there are quite a lot of new clips on the market, so I too would be interested to hear what others recommend.

There is also a Solar tackle - adjusta ball stainless line clip

Then there also a Gardner adjustable line clip as well

But my all time favourite is again the Gardner Free Flow clip as Steve suggested in the first place

Thanks guys. Steve, do you just get one in a pack? Seems a bit dear for just one.

Balsa can be had from any modeller's shop, Dave. If you draw a blank I'll send you some, FOC.

I made my first one. I used a ladies hairclip with some shrink tube over the "jaws" Some balsa over the top of it and some line to tie it onto my bank stick a short loop of nylon tied to it to fix ssg shot on it and it worked. cost? nowt.

I assume it's just 1 in a pack. However there are many copies on the market at a lower price. I saw some a little while back at just 50p. Try your local tackle shop or eBay.

Thanks Rob :)

Old geezer I did a similar thing a few years ago from putting a hair clip in a cork, I got rid of it in the end ironically as it was too light for carp fishing on my bite alarms, I'm wondering if it would be worth making a couple up again. Cheers

Thanks steve. This is what i'm using as bobbins at the moment.

Do you think making the balsa bobbins would be any better than what i'm using at the moment? Cheers

Davedave - one question for you - How many bobbins are you making?

Yes, the Gardner Freeflow line clip are sold one in a pack, which is might look expensive but they do last long if you look after them - it is best to shop around on ebay or tackle shops.

Local boot fairs might find them cheaper! But you can't go wrong with the old fashioned ladies hair clips with a bit of old shrink tubing!

Again my old bobbins used to be to Fairy Liquid bottle top with a bit of blu tack wedge in the centre to take the isotope but I still keeping them! But I rather prefer others type of bobbins for my fishing nowadays!

As for Balsa wood - models shops still have them

but I would have gone through the ebay as for example

they do different diameters and sizes
