Hiya, Wonder if anyone can help with this one, Got my Xmas pesent a wee bit early from the wife, a Kodak DX 4900 Digital camera 4mp . It said on the box that my PC needed 64mb of ram, which it has. I put the software disc in to be told that my PC doesnt have enough mb of ram. I thought to myself, defrag it, but when I left it on ALL night it hadn't done a thing. I had closed all the programs including the screensaver. I hope someone can help as I need this camera to take pictures of all the fish I am going to catch in the future. :D

Memory is very, very cheap these days. PCs run lots, lots better with plenty of it.

Buy memory. Probably best to donate what you have now to an old-memory home and put a fresh 128Mb in the PC. You can get a single board with 128Mb for not much money. Not sure about the UK but if you shop a little in the US, around $15-20 will do it.

are you sure its not 64mb disk space

if its is memory ram then its cheap enough ,have a look through the manual to see what it can take then fill all the slots ,playing with graphics files needs all the memory you can get ,there is nothing worse than waiting 5 minutes for a picture to load ,64mb is about the smallest you can get away with nowadays ,the more the merrier :)

newt you beat me to it :D

Hi Guys, Thanks for your help. The camera actually says that with windows 98se which is my O.S. it needs 48mb ram. My pc has 64mb ram, but as you both say, I suppose I need more mb ram. I will get some tomorrow, is it a big job to fit it, or is it specialised stuff. I can wire a plug. My pc is 2yrs old and it has a 600mhz processor (it was state of the art stuff when I got it), so can you tell me how much ram it would support.

Again guys, thanks.

Norrie :P

youl have to look in the manual or take a peek at the website , you may get some even cheaper memory if your machine is two years old ,there may be tradins available ( memory has trebled in speed ,yours may be old slow stuff)

their all "state of the art" when you buy them unfortunatly by the time you put it together and switch it on its listed on the manufacturers site as "obselete"

do not buy anything before finding out what memory it uses AND if you have vacant slots to put it in :)

98SE will run with a minimal amount of memory. Assuming you aren't in any sort of hurry for anything and don't mind the occasional failure. But for some reason, Microsoft has always quoted a minimum requirement that would make a PC behave like it had snail blood in it.

And 98 can only make use of a certain amount so no need to give it more than it can use.

But from what I've seen and read, the performance change from 64Mb to 128Mb is significant. Above that unless you are using a heavy duty graphics package, you get improvement but not nearly so much. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend you buying 256Mb since I don't think you'd really get enough extra performance from the additional.

With 2K/XP, very different story and XP with 512Mb runs nicely. 98 will actually slow down some if you feed it that amount.

And while you can add to your existing, you would have to worry about making sure it played well with what you have and that you have slots. Thus my suggestion that you retire what you have now and add a single stick of 128Mb. Only needs one slot and no problems matching to existing.

Hiya, Just got back from the shops in Falkirk with my new ram, I got 256mb for £27. Included with this was a crash course on how to fit it. Don't hold your breath, as someone once said " I may be sometime" :D

Well, here I am with my new ram fitted and no smoke coming out of my PC. It definately makes pictures download a lot faster.

Thanks again :D:D

PS, anyone have a good home for a 64mb ram, you can have it if you want???
