Ground Flaxseed

Apparently I need one tablespoon of this for a Christmas recipe I'm going to try. I've never heard of it before but looking at a Google search it seems to be commonly available in health food shops as an oil. Does anyone know what Flaxseed itself tastes like or if there are suitable substitutes available in Sainsburys and the like?

Cheers Dave, does this mean that my braised Red Cabbage will be a tad on the 'chewy' side?

I haven't seen the seeds for sale in any local Herbalists. I get mine by post from an Herbalist in Glastonbury. I use them to make Linseed tea as a remedy for coughs, colds and bronchial catarrh. It's also good for some urinary infections.

The crushed seeds are good in a poultice for ulcers, wounds and inflamed swellings.

So....... what are you cooking up??? :D:D

Help me unhook these, please.

Cheers Onions, sounds scary. After my experiences with swellings this year I don't want reminding so I think I'll be sticking to Delia's recipe again this year.

Hiya Paul. I forgot to mention that it's also used to treat constipation, so if you decide to use it don't exceed the quantity stated in the recipe. It tastes slightly astringent and nutty - if it's for use in a red cabbage recipe, celery would probably be a pleasant and 'friendlier' alternative. Good luck! :D

Help me unhook these, please.
