Uninstaller advice

Have recently acquired an old Acer laptop which although h/w wise is fine it looks like the previous owner has had a history of installing/deleting apps and files almost at random, i.e. some of the uninstallers don't work, some aren't listed in add/remove progs etc. and even if they are they won't uninstall; also some redundant folders and files are present. The machine runs very slow and is also starting to run out of disk space(250MB).

I'd only like to reformat as a last resort as I feel the drivers could be hard to come by so my question is, is there a piece of s/w which will detect/remove unused programs or remnants of programs and unused files.

Jim.

system mechanic will get rid of some but folders etc will be left cluttering the place,a full format will be easier though ,most drivers are still available on driver sites such as this and many others ,remember though to get a list first.
