Recommended Posts

I have a superb Fishing game which I want to run. But it is an old DoS based game (Those were the days!!) How can I run it in XP?? I know there is a way, but cannot for the life in me remember how!!

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

Chris - the game probably depended on making some modifications to autoexec.bat or config.sys or both - putting in some specialized environment variables it needed.

XP doesn't use either of those files under normal conditions but the shortcut to start a DOS app (a .pif file) can be modified to handle the situation.

If the size of the entire install for the game is small enough for you to be willing, email me the install files (not the installed game) and I'll play around and send you back a working copy.

I'd say around 99% or more of the DOS games can be made to run fine on XP. A few can't because of special things a programmer did to make the game manipulate the PC's hardware into doing things it normally couldn't. XP absolutely does not allow an application to make direct hardware calls and the HAL (hardware abstraction layer - a small XP utility thing) that traps app calls to hardware, translates them, and executes the ones it sees as safe may either have decided the call was unsafe or else mis-translated it. In that case, the game simply can't be made to run on NT/2K/XP.

Should have gotten here. Not a problem on your end but our firewall hates files ending in .exe.

If you zip it, the resulting .zip file will go thru nicely.

Won't know for a few days Chris. See the postcard thread in non-fishing for details.
