How do you go about hooking up an old HD to get the files from it onto a new pc?

Get a slot in hard drive carrier.

I use one and can use hard drives to store data and move it form machine to machine.

Have a look on this site

They have the carriers so phone them about the holders.

if you set it as master(and its jumper is set at master/primery)it will boot from there but remember to set the jumpers for your NEW disk as slave you can then transfer the files across to the new drive ,if its settings you want to transfer then use the settings wizard included in xp ,you can also do it the other way round as well but make sure in each case the master (primery) is on the end HD connector to avoid hiccups,be aware if the first disk (of whatever drive) has particions then your second drive will start from the next letter

I.E drive 1 has 3 partitions C/D/E your other drive will need to be set up as letters NOT including those within windows (easy to do within system/hardware/device manager) and also remember your cd drives will also move down the alphabet

and check as it boots both drives are seen ,if not redetect them in bios (its here the boot sequence may fail if both drives jumpers are set to primery )
