If one computer is running with fat 32 and the other with ntfs would there be any probs with trying to network using a lan? would both be able to read from each other only I have read recently that fat 32 systems cannot read from ntfs volumes is this true?

I have wrestled with reality for 46 years, still wrestling.

I have read recently that fat 32 systems cannot read from ntfs volumes is this true? - usually true but not always. However, it only applies when the file systems are in use by drives/partitions on the same PC.

As Pugs noted, not a problem over a network connection since you won't have a PC trying to read the files directly and the files themselves are not changed by NTFS vs. FAT32, only the storage & indexing system the PC is using.
