Getting back to Newts start of the thread, how about the days of our National service in the army.

When a “Squaddie” was put on a charge, either one of these orders had to be carried out...

 

“Whitewash those Coals”

“Cut the Grass with Scissors”

“Sweep the Parade Ground with a Toothbrush”

 

I'm sure there's many more out there that could be remembered.

 

One instance I recall......

 

The squad Sergeant inspecting the early morning parade, noticed one squaddie with a “Staybrite” cap badge in his beret, Sarge ordered him to remove it and said, If the army wanted you to wear staybrite badges, they would have issued you with them, then a retort from somewhere in the rear rank, shouted,...If the army wanted us to have “Bulled” boots, they should have supplied us with them. :D how true
