I have found the jet spinners from shakespeare good for perch. The only place I can get hold of them from

is Bennets of Sheffield

Peter I have noticed that the voblex's are still being made but they look pretty flimsy and poor compared to the originals.

I have seen ads for them. Apparently, for copyright reasons, only similar. I still have a few of the originals and never tire of relying on them.

Hi Pike, welcome.

Panther Martin has a unique fixing of the blade allowing it to be fished slower and deeper than virtually any other in-line spinner on the market.

Not only are they cracking for Perch, but are also one of the best Trout and Arctic Char catchers’ money can buy :):)

Sorry, Vidar, I can't agree. Yes, Panther Martins run nice and deep, but I don't find them so good as a Mepps Aglia for ultra-slow retrieves.

Steve

Have you had much success with marabou tailed jig type lures like the dog nobbler? I have always had a few Perch on them so the biggie I caght in Yorkshire clearly was not a fluke.

Did not RW tie up a fly specifically for Perch and have considerable success with it, the Hanningfield Lure if I am not mistaken.

Yes peter I too have a few originals I remember my Aunty giving me one when I was about 10 and being fascinated by it as it was the weirdest thing I had ever seen, I subsequently went on to buy them regularly until I had built up quite a collection.I was fortunate to be able to fish some old cooling reservoirs when I was younger and used them to catch quite a few perch upto nearly 4lb. I'm sure I lost one or 2 over the then british record, the then record of 4lb 12oz was and still is firmly ingrained in my memory I never did get one on the bank over the record, they were definitely in there though, because in 1986 when they drained the reservoirs they took no fewer than 6 fish over the 5lb 9oz record, have always had a soft spot for perch ever since.

Hmm, I suppose we just have to agree to disagree :D:D

Over the last 35 years spent spinning for Trout & Artic Char back in Norway, trying almost every in-line spinner under the sun, Panther Martin and Vibrax has become my clear favourites.

In fact, I would not even consider going Arctic Char fishing without my 6 & 9 grams Panther Martin with black and yellow body coupled with a fluo-orange blade.

Anyhow, as for Perch my personal preference are the ones with feather-covered hook.

I don't know about the Panther Martin lures because I've never used any but I do make my own spinners with that type of in-line blade and there's no clevis to worry about. They work very well for Trout and Perch especially.

Tony Yes, Dog Nobblers have certainly caught me perch, as have quite a few fly-type lures. One of the best I tried was the Sweeney Todd.

I've never tried a Hanningfield Lure as I wasn't too good at tying flies, so I can't comment. However, I gather those who have used it have done well. As you probably know Walker designed it to imitate a small perch - right down to the blue under the chin!

Vidar Yep, we'll have to agree to differ. I've no experience of arctic char though, only pike, chub, brownies and rainbows, and of course perch.

The ability to retrieve really slowly when needed (so important for perch) is why I like the Mepps Aglia. I've also had pike to 19lbs on this lure, although no twenty on one - yet!

The Abu Reflex is also almost as good until it gets hit by too many pike! This has a feathered hook, plus the serrated blade is supposed to increase the vibrations. I'm not sure to what extent it does so, but it certain gives the impression of stripes - and one of the favourite foods of big perch is baby perch. It's certainly the favourite spinner of my fishing partner, Peter Rogers.

BTW, many of the old books say that a constant speed of retrieve is best for perch. This may be because spinners used to be the most common lure by far for perch. Whilst I agree that a constant speed is usually best with spinners, I find a more erratic retrieve usually much better for plugs and spoons etc.
