Pay special attention to the how-to stuff on 'drop shotting'. Normally done from a boat but basically very similar to the idea of legering.

The use of a small 1 1/2in. curlytail grub with a light jighead or with a leadshot 4-6in. ahead fished slow will produce fish. The color will vary but the tactic is a good one. You will occaisionally get the odd Zander with this method as well.
